Stitches and Abbreviation
- ch – chain stitch
- ss – slip stitch
- sc – single crochet
- hdc – half double crochet
- dc – double crochet
- Afghan sc – Afghan stitch single crochet (a variation of single crochet worked in the vertical bars)
- FLO – Front loops only
- BLO – Back loops only
- sk – Skip
- sc2tog – Single crochet two stitches together (decrease)
Special Stitches
The unfinished double crochet cluster stitch is created by starting a double crochet stitch but leaving the last loop on the hook unfinished. This creates a puffy texture in the petals of the flower.
Working in the front loops only (FLO) or back loops only (BLO) creates different textures and helps to create defined edges and shapes in the pattern. By working in the front or back loops only, you can create ridges or raised areas on the surface of the petals.
The Afghan stitch is a technique used to create a dense and textured fabric. It involves inserting the hook from right to left under the vertical bars of the stitches instead of the traditional method. This stitch is used in certain rows to add depth and texture to the petals and leaves.

What size is the yarn used for the flowers?
4-ply cotton yarn, you can get it on the web.
Are you using fingering, DK, Worsted? What weight yarn? I don’t know how to interpret 4 ply. Thank you. Your flower patterns are beautiful. Thank you for offering them for free with videos.
Hi! What is a “flower rod”?
stem?
What length does the wire need to be cut for the leaves?
Hi – trying to follow the pattern for the dahlia flower, and on R8 – I am not sure what (use afghan stitch, 1sc, sk1, 6dc, 2sc) ch1 sk2, 1sc, 5dc, 1sc mean…..I am used to doing a 6 afghan sc stitch. But in this case, is it saying to put the 1 sc, 6dc, 2sc all on and then pull them off in reverse like a typical afghan stitch? Please let me know – thx
